Hippocampus Neuroprotection During Lactation: a Model to Study Neuroendocrine-Immune Interactions
نویسنده
چکیده
During motherhood the maternal brain undergoes a collection of adaptive changes including behavioral, neuroendocrine, and autonomic responses related to maternal behavior and milk production. Steroid (estradiol, progesterone, and corticosterone) and peptide hormone (oxytocin and prolactin) levels fluctuate having an impact in areas of the maternal brain inducing structural and functional changes. Recent reports from our laboratory documented neuroprotection in the hippocampus of lactating rats against excitotoxic damage induced by kainic acid. This review focuses on recent studies about neural plasticity induced by reproduction in the maternal brain, with special focus on lactation as a model for neuroprotection, and on the possible involvement of the immune system in this phenomenon.

Effect of Boswellia serrata Triana & Planch. gum resin administration during lactation on morphology of pyramidal neurons in hippocampus of rat
Background & Aim: In traditional medicine, Boswellia species gum resin known as Frankincense or Olibanum, has been administrated in elderly for enhancement of memory and also in pregnant women to increase memory and intelligence of progeny. However, it has been rarely scientifically documented so far. We have previously reported that maternal administration of Frankincense during lacta...

متن کاملIntergenerational accumulation of impairments in maternal behavior following postnatal social stress
Early adversity such as depressed maternal care can have long-term physiological and behavioral effects on offspring and future generations. Exposure to chronic social stress (CSS), an ethologically model of postpartum depression and anxiety, during lactation impairs maternal care and exerts similar effects on the F1 dam offspring of the stressed F0 dams. These changes associate with increased ...
متن کاملEffect of pyridoxine deficiency on the structural and functional development of hippocampus.
In this study it was attempted to understand the effect of pyridoxine deficiency on the structural and functional development of the hippocampus. Hippocampus has been closely associated with complex neuroendocrine control of physiological activities as well as behavioural responses including learning process and memory retention. Prenatal, preweanling and weanling deficiency of pyridoxine was i...
